Woodlands Xchange shop owners first to get chance at eco-shop certification

Shop owners at the soon-to-be-launched Woodlands Xchange will be among the first in Singapore to qualify for certification as eco-shops.

Woodlands Xchange is located within Woodlands MRT station.

This will be made possible under Project: Eco-Shop, Singapore’s first comprehensive eco-certification programme for shop owners.

SMRT Corporation Ltd (SMRT) and Singapore Environment Council (SEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create the certification programme.

It is aimed at guiding and encouraging shop owners to fit their shops in an environmentally sustainable manner and adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily operations.

Some eco-friendly habits include turning off electrical equipment when not in use and using energy-efficient lighting.

Shop owners will be awarded the Eco-Shop Label once they have successfully completed an audit.

The audit assesses the performance of their shops in the areas of environmental management and awareness, purchasing and operations, air quality, energy conservation, waste management and water conservation.

The 32 tenants at Woodlands Xchange will be guided by SMRT and SEC to qualify for Eco-Shop Label certification in time for the launch of the retail outlet later in the year.

A joint statement from SMRT and SEC said following the opening of Woodlands Xchange, all shop owners in Singapore will be invited to be Eco-Shop Label-certified.

The target is to get 600 shop owners certified in three years.
