Rail improvements may cost $900m

The ambitious plan to upgrade the ageing North-South and East-West MRT lines will be expanded and hastened by SMRT Corp and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), reported The Straits Times.

But this requires a bigger budget, with SMRT’s latest estimate at approximately S$900 million. The rail operator and LTA haven’t finalised the overall amount as yet, or how to split it.

Nevertheless, the agencies are not allowing costs to derail the improvement works, which involves a wider scope.

This includes replacing the signalling system, the power-supplying third-rail system and the wooden sleepers beneath the metal tracks.
