Sembawang’s only wet market to stay

STALLHOLDERS at Sembawang New Market in Canberra Road – the only wet market in Sembawang – will stay put after all, instead of making way for a FairPrice supermarket.

Health Minister and Sembawang GRC MP Khaw Boon Wan said yesterday the market operator has decided to extend its lease with the Housing Board.

The decision came after news broke more than a week ago that stallholders at the wet market had been told to leave by the end of the month.

The market’s master tenant had decided to end its lease, and it was reported that the space would likely be taken over by a FairPrice supermarket.

That will not happen now.

Describing the latest turn of events as a ‘good development’, Mr Khaw said the operator was now discussing the extension of its tenancy with the HDB. Continue reading

HDB to Sheng Siong: 6 wet markets must stay

They do not meet criteria for conversion into supermarkets

SUPERMARKET chain Sheng Siong, which is planning to take over six wet markets, has been told by the Housing Board that it cannot convert them into supermarkets.

The wet markets will have to stay because they do not meet the criteria for conversion into supermarkets, the HDB said yesterday.

Applications for such instances of conversion of use are assessed on a case-by- case basis, depending on the needs of residents, stall occupancy rate, operating hours and number of customers.

But while the HDB’s announcement should please residents who are loath to give up shopping in their neighbourhood wet markets, there is still a question mark over the stallholders’ livelihood. Continue reading
