New NHCS building gets BCA Green Mark Platinum Award

The new National Heart Centre Singapore building received a prestigious Green Mark Platinum Award from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), forintegrating eco-friendly features and practices.

To be completed by end-2013, the S$165 million project has had S$5 million allotted to include green features, which are expected to yield energy and water savings of up to S$1.3 million annually.

The 12-storey building was specifically positioned to ensure it has no direct West-facing façade, so it will not receive direct solar heat and as such, will be able to reduce its air conditioners’ consumption. It is also equipped with an energy-efficient air-conditioning plant and has nearly 2,200 sq m of greenery.

Endorsed by the National Environment Agency (NEA), the BCA Green Mark is a green building rating system that evaluates projects for their environmental impact and performance.
Meanwhile, a record 24 builders will receive BCA’s Green and Gracious Builder Award this year.
Introduced in 2009, the Green and Gracious Builder Award is part of BCA’s initiatives to promote environmental protection, sustainability and considerate practices during the development’s construction phase.

The recipients of the award are recognised for implementing measures that help prevent soil erosion and minimise noise, dust and vibration during construction.
